3 PEAKS CHALLENGE JULY 2010
Scroll down to read Steve's weekly message to his 3 Peaks Challenge supporters
Stephen Firth, our Home Visitor, will be completing the 3 Peaks Challenge in July this year, in order to raise funds for WRBA.
Below is a personal message from Steve, who is busy preparing for the walk.
“ I’m Steve and I work for the WRBA as Home Visitor. My daughter, Emma, and I are walking the 3 Peaks in the Yorkshire Dales in order to raise funds for our Association.
In recent years, I have run the Humber Bridge Half Marathon and two Leeds 10K runs, but this year I felt I needed another challenge. It is going to be 26 miles and 12 hours of hard slog and three huge climbs on the way, namely Whernside (2415 ft), Pen-y-Ghent (2,277 ft) and Ingleborough (2,375 ft). I thought I would take it easy, but my daughter is determined to do it under 12 hours and earn a 3 Peaks certificate.
We have to clock in and out at the clocking-in machine at the Pen-y-Ghent cafe in Horton in Ribblesdale. We have to step up the training and conditioning now – oh dear, I sound like a professional walker!
Why am I putting myself through this? Because I see, on a regular basis, the difficulties that visually impaired people in the Wakefield MDC area have to cope with. I have seen over the years the tremendous support that the West Riding Blind Association gives and the difference it makes to the lives of the visually impaired in the Wakefield area. I have had the privilege of visiting people in all areas of the Wakefield MDC from South Elmsall to Knottingley and to Netherton in the west. It worries me to think of what would happen if the WRBA were not there to offer help, support and advice.
So, when my joints are creaking, my blisters are bursting and I am dehydrating in the sun or floundering in the rain, with your support I will be determined to complete the walk.
So, if you can spare a moment please give whatever you can and I promise I will not let you down.”
If you would like to sponsor Steve, sponsorship forms are available from the office. Or you can send a donation direct to the office. Tel: 01924 215555 for more details.
Steve's weekly 3 Peaks Challenge training update - 9.6.10
"We have been stepping up the walking (and running) lately and have tried to include some steep climbs. Must not forget that there are 3 very big peaks to get to the top of. Am studying my Ordnance Survey map to ensure we do not end up adding 10 miles to the route! We are going to try and get an early start (about 5.30am). That should shock the sheep. Getting nervous now - especially as your wonderful donations are pouring in! Best wishes Steve and Emma."
How to donate to WRBA – for every £1 we raise, WRBA spends 95p directly helping blind and partially sighted people, 3p on raising further funds and 2p on administration.
Donations – can be made by cash, cheque or postal order. Please make cheques and postal orders payable to “West Riding Blind Association” or simply “WRBA”. We do not advise cash donations to be sent by post.
Standing Order Mandate – why not donate on a regular monthly basis? No amount is too small - £2 or £3 a month soon adds up! Simply ring Delia at the office and ask for a Standing Order Mandate form.
Legacy – why not remember WRBA in your will and help ensure that future visually impaired people are supported by our service?
Collecting Box – our blue boxes are perfect for collecting all that loose change at home, in shops or any local business. Our volunteers will deliver the box for you, collect it and count it in the office, under the supervision of a member of staff. An official receipt is always issued detailing the amount collected and every box has a tamper proof seal.
Gift Aid – if you are a UK Taxpayer, use Gift Aid to make your donation worth more. Ring the office for a Gift Aid declaration form, or tick the Gift Aid box on our donation and fund raising literature.
